“There is room for everyone” is one of the mottos of the Beckton based charity which operates from St Marks Community Centre primarily on Friday nights. The charity which has grown in such a short space of time has become increasing popular within the local community. As City Chapel celebrates its third anniversary this month, the charity is surging ahead with initiatives and programs to assist and support more residents within Newham and its environs.

These initiatives included St Matthews Supplementary School for its work providing support to Children from all background from KS1 to A Level to boast children’s grades and 11+ preparation amongst others, and East London City Projects Learning Families Project for its work enabling Newham Residents to love and live affectively in Newham.

Partnerships have been developed and were showcased including Teen Challenge for the great work with homeless people affected by Drug and Alcohol; Cancer Awareness, and Word of Life Outreach Ministry for work with those affected by Aids & HIV. The Event was covered by Destiny TV and Channel S a Bengali Television reaching out to the wider Bengali community.

The Newham Foodbank began in 2010 as part of the network of Foodbanks operating across England in association with the Trussel Trust. It is a life changing community based project providing emergency food and assistance for those in need.

Foodbank’s Ambassador Cllr Ayesha Chowdhury praised the work of the Foodbank in providing vitally needed food to families from different cultural and economic backgrounds in a climate of cut backs and unemployment. She encouraged the whole community to support it and get involved.

The Food bank’s aim is to alleviate poverty, deprivation, and despair within the Newham Community. It provides direct help to individuals and families by giving food and financial support when they need it most and through projects that are practical and sustainable. A network of distributors consisting of health visitors, social workers and other community based support workers, refer people using a food voucher to the Foodbank centre where individuals and families receive food. Other services are also available to help them out of their crisis with more programs in the pipeline.

This vital service to the community is able to continue through the generosity of donations from various organisations and individuals including schools, churches and local people.
